The BWF has a system of awards to recognise excellence, achievement and service to the BWF, the sport and to the badminton community. The system of awards is governed by the Award Regulations in the Statutes Section 1.2.3 which details the selection criteria for each award and defines who can nominate individuals and organisations for an award.

Nominations must be received by the Secretary General no later than 31 October each year. These will be reviewed by the Awards Commission and recommendations are then made to the Governance and Ethics Committee and then to Council at its October / November meeting each year.

Player Awards

Awards Overview Who can Nominate
Hall Of Fame The BWF Hall of Fame is to honour players (and on rare occasions, administrators) who have enhanced the sport through exceptional achievements. Nominees must have retired from international badminton competition or have not been a significant factor on the international circuit for a period of three years or more. Council

Player of the Year Award – Badminton The awards honour exceptional badminton talent: exceptional and consistent performance, fair play, personality and profile across a 12-month Eligibility Period. Five awards are made annually:

  • Men’s Singles Player of the Year
  • Women’s Singles Player of the Year
  • Men’s Doubles Player of the Year
  • Women’s Doubles Player of the Year
  • Mixed Doubles Player of the Year.

Eddy Choong Rising Star of the Year Award The Eddy Choong Rising Star of the Year Award is presented annually and recognises one individual, an emerging top world talent in the sport (who is under 22 years old). The award reflects promising and improving performances across a 12-month period (1 December of one year to 30 November the next year). Awards Commission

Players’ Player of the Year Award (Badminton) The Players’ Player of the Year Award aims to recognise not only the exceptional achievements on court but also the outstanding contributions and significant positive impacts players make off court. The award is a “player driven” award where players vote for their peers.

Two players will receive the award each year:

  • Players Player (men)
  • Players Player (women)

Para Badminton Player of The Year Award The awards are to honour Para badminton talent, world performance and personality and profile of individual players or pairs in the sport across a 12-month period of the Eligibility Period.

 

Three awards are given annually:

  • Men’s Para Badminton Player of the Year
  • Women’s Para Badminton Player of the Year,
  • Para Badminton Pair of the Year.

Herbert Scheele Trophy The Herbert Scheele Trophy is presented for outstanding and exceptional services to badminton. Recipients of this award are presented with a replica of the Herbert Scheele Trophy. Council
Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award is a highly prestigious award given by the BWF to recognise individuals who have made a significant and lifetime contribution towards the advancement and promotion of the sport worldwide. Continental Confederations

Meritorious Service Award Meritorious Service Award is presented to honour exemplary service to badminton at the national level. Member Associations
President’s Medal The President’s Medal is to honour distinguished individuals or organisations who have made an exceptional contribution to badminton. BWF President
Gender Equity and Diversity Award The Gender Equity and Diversity Award recognises an individual (man or woman) or an organisation that has made a significant contribution towards the involvement of women or girls (or other under-represented groups) in badminton.

Beyond being a strong role model, the nominee must also have actively contributed to the involvement of others in the promotion of the sport.
