Elections Q&A
1. When are the elections?
Friday 14 November to Sunday 16 November.
Electronic voting – Polls are open for 48 hours, from 12:00 noon (Kuala Lumpur time) Friday to 12:00 noon (Kuala Lumpur time) Sunday.
2. How many positions?
6 members of the Para badminton Athletes’ Commission will be elected.
3. Who can be Candidates?
To be a candidate, players must be 1) at least 18 years of age on 14 November 2025, 2) in ‘good standing’ with their Association, and 3) not serving a period of ineligibility.
Active Players – those on the Para Badminton World Ranking List as of 11 July 2025.
Inactive Players – those that have retired from Para badminton by not competing in any BWF sanctioned tournaments in the last two years (as from Friday 11 July 2025) and/or their Association has submitted the BWF Player Retirement Form to the BWF office. To be eligible for nomination for the election, the Inactive Player must have competed in:
- at least one of these – Tokyo 2020 / Paris 2024 Paralympic Games; or
- a BWF Para Badminton World Championships (2017, 2019, 2022 or 2024).
4. Who can nominate players for the elections?
Nominations can be made by 1) “Active Players” [players cannot nominate themselves], 2) BWF Member Associations or 3) Para-sports organisations recognised by BWF.
Use the Nomination Form (linked here) to nominate candidates. The name of each person / organisation nominating candidates, will be published with the profiles of each candidate.
Deadline for nominations – Friday 29 August 2025 (midnight KL time)
5. How do you register to vote?
Eligible players (see below) must register to vote in the elections (registration period is 5 September to 9 November 2025).
6. Who can Vote?
Only “eligible players” can vote. They must:
- Be 18 years of age or older on Friday 14 November 2025.
- Be in “good standing” with their Member Association / Para-Sports Organisation.
- Not be serving a period of ineligibility under the BWF Statutes.
- Be an “Active player” – on the BWF Para badminton World Ranking (11 July 2025).
- registered to vote by the deadline – Sunday 9 November 2025.
7. When are the elections?
Electronic voting starts at 12:00 noon Kuala Lumpur time on Friday 14 November 2025 until Sunday 16 November [12:00 noon KL time].
Those voting must vote for exactly 6 candidates.
8. What criteria will be applied to fill the 6 vacant positions?
a) The male player and the female player with the highest number of votes will take the first 2 positions.
b) The next position shall be filled by the candidate with the highest number of votes from either a Wheelchair Sport Class or a Standing Sport Class (but only if the Sport Class is not already represented in the first 2 positions filled – highest male / highest female).
c) The next position is filled by the candidate with the next highest number of votes from a different continental region to those players already selected / elected above.
All other positions are filled in order – players with the next highest number of votes.
No two members of the Commission shall come from the same Association.
Brief Summary of Election Procedures 2025
- Only eligible Active Players or eligible Inactive Players can be candidates (over 18 years old, in good standing with their Association, and not serving a period of ineligibility).
- Eligible players must register themselves to vote in the elections.
- Only ‘eligible voters’ can take part in the elections (see process above).
- Each Member Association will validate their list of ‘eligible voters’.
- The list of ‘eligible voters’ will be published on the BWF website.
- The list will be sent to the company who provides the online voting system.
- An independent scrutineer will check the master list loaded into the voting system.
- Each registered voter will receive a link and login details to vote in the elections.
- Each registered voter must cast their own vote. No one can vote on behalf of others.
- The poll will be open for 48 hours – from Friday 14 November [12:00 noon Kuala Lumpur time] to Sunday 16 November [12:00 noon Kuala Lumpur time].
- Those voting must vote for exactly 6 candidates (not more / not less).
- This is a secret ballot.
- The female and the male with the highest votes are automatically elected. See page above for the criteria applied to fill the next 4 positions.
- No two members of the Commission shall come from the same Member Association or Para-Sports organisation recognised by BWF.
- Results including the number of votes will be announced by the BWF on Sunday 16 November 2025 and published on the website.
